WITH MOST PEOPLE the size of Mr. Harris, Retik would’ve split them in half if they’d yelled at him like that. Reminded him of the drill sergeant in boot camp. Until he’d broken the man’s arm in judo class.

Retik was fairly certain, however, that if he raised a finger to C. J. Harris’s head he wouldn’t leave the building alive. Perhaps not even the room. He focused his attention on the smaller man.

“…were you thinking, for God’s sake? In a parking lot? It was all over the news, Retik. That’s all we need.”

Discretion was the better part of valor. At least for now. Someday, he might meet Mr. Harris in a parking lot for a few minutes, but for now… “Sorry, Mr. Harris.”

Harris walked away to look out the window, his back to Retik. “Christ, with your record, I figured you’d have no problem with a few—clean-up operations.”

“No sir.”

Harris sat in his chair facing the desk and rubbed his brow with a well-manicured hand as though he were fighting off a headache. “We intercepted a call to Peter Shelby. It came from a pay phone just off the highway in Virginia, so they might have headed south, but we can’t take the chance. If we can’t get the reporter, we’ve got to cut off his sources.”

“Yes, sir.”

“That traitor Edwards had a secretary. I don’t think Travis has gotten to her yet, or he probably would’ve gone public.” Harris gave him a look that scared half of Washington, D.C. “Do you think you can handle an old lady, Retik?”

For a second the rage seethed in the powerfully built man, but the self-control that had kept him alive in Africa and South America served him well. “No problem.”

“Find out what she knows, if anything. Then, for God’s sake, make it look like an accident. Get it done tomorrow.” Harris whirled the chair about in an unmistakable gesture of dismissal.

Retik ground his teeth. Someday… “Yes, sir.”
